Adapting to Changing Climates: The Future of the Outdoor Living Industry

As an organisation, we are continually seeking innovative ways to support our members while also contributing positively to the broader garden industry.

Did you know that 70% of individuals report feeling an improvement in both their physical and mental wellbeing after spending time outdoors? Exposure to nature enhances happiness, boosts health, and increases work productivity. People are increasingly valuing outdoor environments that encourage relaxation, contemplation, and a connection with the natural world. This is encouraging news for our industry. However, with this growing desire to spend time in our gardens, we must remain conscious of nature and the implications of climate change. The World Meteorological Organisation has projected that, over the next five years, northern Europe, will likely experience above-average rainfall. As global temperatures rise, more regions are encountering extreme weather conditions, such as prolonged heatwaves and heavier rainfalls.

Consequently, the outdoor living industry must evolve, producing furniture capable of withstanding both hot and wet conditions. Consumers may not yet realise it, but they will soon be seeking more weather-resilient outdoor solutions. These include covered areas, rain and heat-resistant materials, stylish and versatile fire pits, modular outdoor kitchens, and entertainment spaces that enable enjoyment of outdoor areas throughout the year.

The ultimate aim is to meet the consumer demand for creating resilient, nature-focused environments that promote well-being and allow for outdoor enjoyment regardless of the season or weather conditions.

In the United Kingdom, 60% of people agree that climate change poses the greatest threat to civilisation. As an industry, we must proactively think ahead and begin developing future-proof products that can endure all the elements while ensuring these items are durable, sustainable, and reusable.

For this reason, LOFA have commissioned a comprehensive report from Scarlet Opus, designed to transform our members’ understanding of consumer trends for 2026 & 2027. Supported by extensive global research and expert insights, this report provides unmatched clarity in our continuously evolving outdoor leisure market. It will enable our members to offer products that consumers desire and can effectively use in this constantly changing world.

By prioritising both innovation and sustainability, it will empower our members to provide products that consumers desire to create outdoor spaces that foster well-being and withstand the challenges posed by our changing climate, ensuring that both our members and the broader garden industry thrive.
